Inmates left unattended in jail transport van for hours, internal investigation underway

At the Kalamazoo County Jail in Michigan, an incident occurred where two inmates were left unattended in a transport van for several hours, leading to the suspension of two sheriff's office employees. The oversight happened after the inmates were transported back to the jail following a court appearance on May 17, 2023. They were discovered still in the van around 1:30 a.m. the next day, after having been left there since approximately 7:30 p.m. the previous evening. The internal investigation by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office concluded that the incident was due to human error, and the two employees involved were placed on paid administrative leave pending further review. The inmates were unharmed, and the sheriff's office emphasized that this was an isolated incident and not reflective of their usual standards of care and security.
