Two Brownfield residents admitted to conspiring to transport illegal aliens for payment.
On May 29, 2025, two Brownfield residents, Jose Luis Avalos and Katrina Mendoza, were found guilty in a federal court in Lubbock, Texas, for transporting illegal aliens. The conviction followed an incident on January 11, 2024, when law enforcement stopped a vehicle driven by Avalos, with Mendoza as a passenger, and discovered five undocumented immigrants inside. Both Avalos and Mendoza face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with sentencing scheduled for August 29, 2025.
