New fiber optic cable in place to fix communications problems plaguing flights to Newark, DOT says

A new fiber-optic cable, spanning 12,000 kilometers, is being laid across the ocean floor to enhance internet connectivity between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. This project, named the "South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6" (SEA-ME-WE 6), aims to increase data transmission speeds and capacity, supporting the growing demand for high-speed internet. The cable will connect Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, and France. The initiative is a collaborative effort among 16 telecom operators and is expected to be completed by 2025, significantly boosting digital infrastructure and economic development across these regions.
