The move Wednesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is vastly different from a decision reiterated by the agency in July that the inflators made by ARC Automotive Inc. of Tennessee are defective, dangerous and should be recalled.

Regulators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have decided to step back from a proposed massive recall of 52 million air bag inflators manufactured by ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive, citing the need for further investigation. This decision comes after a preliminary evaluation that began in 2015, following reports of ruptures in the inflators that led to injuries and at least one death. The NHTSA had been considering a recall due to concerns over the inflators' potential to explode and hurl shrapnel, but has now opted to gather more data and conduct additional testing before making a final determination. ARC Automotive, which acquired the inflators from Delphi in 2009, has maintained that its products are safe and that the incidents were isolated.
