Morning Midas was en route to Mexico with at least 800 electric cars when the fire broke out in the Pacific

A fire broke out on the car carrier ship Fremantle Highway off the coast of the Netherlands, leading to the abandonment of the vessel by its crew. The ship, operated by Shoei Kisen Kaisha, was carrying approximately 3,000 vehicles, including 25 electric vehicles (EVs), from Germany to Egypt. The fire, which started on July 25, 2023, is suspected to have originated from one of the EVs, though the exact cause remains under investigation. The crew of 23 was safely evacuated, but one crew member died during the evacuation. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of transporting EVs on ships due to their lithium-ion batteries, which can be difficult to extinguish once they catch fire. The ship is currently being monitored to prevent environmental damage, and efforts are underway to extinguish the fire and tow the vessel to a safe location.
