The Congress party in India has criticized the government's economic policies, claiming that most Indians are excluded from the consumption economy, as evidenced by recent automobile sales figures. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), passenger vehicle sales in May 2023 were 2.6% lower than in May 2018, despite a population increase of 7.5% over the same period. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighted that this decline in per capita sales indicates that the majority of Indians are unable to participate in the consumption economy. He further criticized the government for focusing on headline figures rather than addressing the underlying economic issues faced by the general population.
