Transport Minister Chris Bishop said the road was designed with safety features in mind, and mostly straight.

The speed limit on Auckland's Northern Gateway toll road will increase from 90km/h to 100km/h starting July 24, as announced by Transport Minister Simeon Brown. This change aims to improve travel efficiency and safety by aligning the speed limit with the motorway standards, allowing drivers to reach their destinations more quickly and safely. The decision follows a review by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, which found that the road's design and safety features support the higher speed limit. Brown emphasized that this adjustment will benefit thousands of daily users by reducing travel times and enhancing the overall driving experience on the toll road.
