On January 11, 2023, a significant failure in the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system led to a temporary halt of all domestic departures across the U.S., causing widespread flight disruptions. This incident, which occurred at Newark Liberty International Airport among others, was described as "frightening" by former Transportation Secretary under President Trump, Elaine Chao. The outage, which lasted from 7:21 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET, resulted in over 10,000 flight delays and more than 1,300 cancellations nationwide. Chao criticized the current Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg, for his handling of the situation, suggesting that the incident highlighted broader issues within the Department of Transportation under his leadership.
