  • Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will unveil a major overhaul of the nation's air traffic control system Thursday. While the effort was already in motion, recent delays and safety concerns at Newark Airport have brought new urgency to the effort. Duffy says the plan includes modernizing telecom, radar and infrastructure, along with hiring more controllers, calling it a fix for a problem decades in the making.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced a significant overhaul of air travel regulations on May 8, 2023, aimed at enhancing passenger rights and improving airline accountability. The new rules, set to be implemented over the next year, will mandate airlines to provide compensation and cover expenses like meals and hotel stays for passengers affected by airline-caused delays or cancellations. Additionally, the Department of Transportation will introduce a new online dashboard to help consumers compare airlines based on their policies regarding delays, cancellations, and customer service. This initiative responds to widespread passenger dissatisfaction and numerous flight disruptions experienced in recent years, aiming to restore trust and improve the overall air travel experience.
