Lancaster County school van driver gets prison time for transporting students while DUI

A Lancaster County school van driver, 77-year-old James Douglas Maier, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after crashing into a utility pole on January 26, 2023, while transporting three students from New Holland Elementary School. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on West Main Street in New Holland, Pennsylvania. None of the students were injured, but Maier, who has been employed by the school district for 18 years, was found to have a blood alcohol content of .127, above the legal limit of .08. He faces charges including DUI and endangering the welfare of children, and has been placed on administrative leave by the Eastern Lancaster County School District pending the outcome of the investigation.
