  John Leo Lucarelli was the only person on board a small plane crash on June 25, 2023, near a home at Frying Pan Road.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its final report on the 2023 plane crash near Southport, detailing that the accident occurred due to the pilot's loss of control during a go-around maneuver. The report specifies that the pilot, who was the sole occupant of the single-engine aircraft, failed to maintain adequate airspeed, leading to an aerodynamic stall and subsequent crash into a wooded area. The NTSB's investigation found no mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have contributed to the accident, emphasizing that the crash was a result of pilot error. The report also highlighted the importance of proper training and adherence to standard operating procedures during critical phases of flight.
