The amount of mercury being transported through rivers all over the world has risen up to three-fold since the Industrial Revolution.
The transport of mercury into rivers has increased threefold since the Industrial Revolution, according to a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience. Researchers from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the University of Michigan analyzed sediment cores from 10 North American lakes to track changes in mercury levels over the past 300 years. The study found that human activities, particularly the burning of coal and the use of mercury in gold mining, have significantly increased the amount of mercury entering waterways. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can harm wildlife and humans, and the increase in its transport to rivers poses a growing threat to ecosystems and public health.
