The Maharashtra transport commissioner, Vivek Bhimanwar, has directed officials not to take action against vehicles fitted with cycle carriers, following a Bombay High Court order that overturned a previous mandate requiring a fitness certificate for such modifications. This decision came after a petition challenged the transport department's requirement, arguing that cycle carriers do not alter the vehicle's original structure or affect its safety. The court's ruling emphasized that such carriers are permissible as long as they do not exceed the vehicle's overall length limit of 10.5 meters, and it criticized the transport department for overstepping its authority by mandating fitness certificates for these modifications.
