  • Democratic attorneys general say the Trump administration is threatening to withhold billions of dollars in transportation and disaster-relief funds unless states agree to certain immigration enforcement actions.

Twenty states, led by California and New York, have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration challenging new conditions imposed on federal transportation and disaster relief funds. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, argues that the Department of Transportation and the Department of Homeland Security are unlawfully withholding funds by requiring states to provide information on undocumented immigrants. The states contend that these conditions, which include sharing data on undocumented immigrants with federal immigration authorities, are not only beyond the agencies' authority but also coercive and harmful to public safety and trust. The lawsuit seeks to block these new requirements, asserting that they interfere with states' rights and their ability to effectively manage transportation and disaster relief programs.
