On May 15, 2025, two inmates escaped from a court transport van in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, leading to the placement of several staff members on administrative leave. The escape occurred around 11:30 a.m. when the inmates, who were being transported from the Kalamazoo County Jail to the courthouse, managed to break out of the van near the intersection of North Westnedge Avenue and West Michigan Avenue. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, along with other law enforcement agencies, initiated a manhunt for the escaped inmates, identified as John Doe and Jane Smith, both of whom were awaiting trial for serious felony charges. The incident has prompted an internal investigation to assess security protocols and determine any lapses that contributed to the escape. The community has been advised to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the fugitives to authorities immediately.
