The Trump administration said Thursday states could lose federal transportation funding over failing to cooperate on federal immigration enforcement efforts or for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told states and other grant recipients in a letter that recipients of USDOT financial assistance must ensure personnel practices are merit-based. In March, a federal appeals court said the Trump administration could temporarily ban DEI programs at federal agencies and businesses with government contracts, which had been blocked by a lower court.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has warned states that they could lose federal funding if they do not comply with federal rules regarding the placement of children in foster care, particularly those identifying as LGBTQI+. The warning comes in response to a new law in Tennessee that allows foster parents to decline placements based on their religious beliefs, which the department says violates federal regulations. The department emphasized that all children in foster care must be placed in safe and appropriate settings, and that states must ensure compliance with these rules or risk losing federal funding.
