Rule changes announced by the Trump administration could allow automakers to report fewer crashes involving self-driving cars, with Tesla potentially emerging as the main beneficiary.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has introduced new rules requiring automakers and tech companies like Tesla to report crashes involving advanced driver assistance systems or self-driving vehicles, even if no injuries or airbag deployments occur. These rules, effective from June 15, 2024, aim to enhance the monitoring of autonomous vehicle technology by mandating reports within 24 hours of incidents involving vehicles with SAE automation levels of L2 or higher. This change comes in response to a significant increase in reported crashes, with 427 incidents noted in the last year alone, highlighting the need for stricter oversight and data collection to ensure the safety and reliability of self-driving technologies.
