  • U.S. auto safety regulators on Wednesday closed a probe into whether General Motors' self-driving unit Cruise robotaxis were taking sufficient precautions to safeguard pedestrians.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has closed its investigation into General Motors' Cruise self-driving vehicles after determining that the company's voluntary software update addressed concerns about pedestrian safety. The investigation, which began in October, focused on the vehicles' ability to detect and appropriately respond to pedestrians, particularly in crosswalks. NHTSA found that Cruise's software update, which was implemented in December, improved the detection of pedestrians and the vehicles' response to them, thus mitigating the risks identified during the probe. The closure of the investigation does not absolve Cruise of potential future scrutiny, as NHTSA emphasized that they will continue to monitor the performance of Cruise's autonomous driving systems.
