  • GM said it sees a better business case in developing autonomous technology for personal cars rather than to develop robotaxis for Cruise.

General Motors (GM) has decided to end its Cruise robotaxi service following a series of safety incidents and regulatory scrutiny. The decision comes after a pedestrian was dragged by a Cruise vehicle in San Francisco, leading to the suspension of the company's driverless testing permit by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. This incident, along with other safety concerns, prompted a comprehensive safety review and a significant reduction in Cruise's operations. GM, which had invested heavily in Cruise, is now focusing on rebuilding trust and ensuring the safety of its autonomous vehicle technology before resuming operations. The move reflects broader challenges in the autonomous vehicle industry, where safety and public perception are critical for success.
