Tamil Nadu Government cracks the whip on bike taxis in Chennai
- Transport Commissionerate in Chennai cracks down on bike taxis operated by Ola, Uber, and Rapido, enforcing Motor Vehicles Act.
The Commissionerate of Transport and Road Safety in Chennai has initiated a crackdown on bike taxi services, following a directive from the Madras High Court. The enforcement began on January 15, 2024, targeting aggregators like Rapido, Uber, and Ola for operating without proper licenses. The court had previously ruled that these services were illegal under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as they do not comply with regulations for commercial transport. The crackdown involves impounding bikes and fining riders, with fines reaching up to ₹10,000. This action has led to significant disruptions for riders and passengers, with many bike taxi drivers facing penalties and the potential loss of their primary source of income. The Transport Commissioner has emphasized that this enforcement will continue until the aggregators comply with the legal requirements for operating commercial bike taxi services.
