Wrong-way driver brought to a halt after DPS trooper crashed into him on Loop 101

The driver, 26-year-old Nicholas Chavez, was arrested on charges including aggravated DUI driving wrong way, a Class 4 felony.
A wrong-way driver on Loop 101 in Phoenix was stopped after a dramatic intervention by Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers. The incident began when the driver, traveling south in the northbound lanes, was spotted by troopers around 1:30 a.m. near 7th Street. Despite attempts to stop him, the driver continued, leading to a trooper intentionally crashing into the wrong-way vehicle to halt its progress. This action successfully stopped the vehicle near 32nd Street, but resulted in minor injuries to both the driver and the trooper involved. The driver, identified as 30-year-old Jose Ruben Huerta, was arrested on charges including aggravated DUI, aggravated assault, and endangerment. The trooper was treated and released from the hospital, while Huerta was also hospitalized for his injuries.
