  • A group representing major automakers on Friday said it filed lawsuit to block a landmark rule from the administration of President Joe Biden requiring nearly all new cars and trucks by 2029 to have advanced automatic emergency braking systems.

A group of automakers, including Stellantis, GM, and Toyota, along with the American Automotive Policy Council, have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to block a new rule mandating automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems in all new cars and light trucks by September 2029. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, argues that the rule's requirements are technologically unfeasible and would impose excessive costs on manufacturers. The rule aims to reduce rear-end and pedestrian crashes but the automakers claim that the technology to meet these standards, particularly in terms of speed and effectiveness, does not yet exist or would be prohibitively expensive to develop and implement.
