  • A U.S. auto safety agency said on Friday it is reconsidering a landmark rule from the administration of former President Joe Biden requiring nearly all new cars and trucks by 2029 to have advanced automatic emergency braking systems.

The Trump administration is reviewing a proposed rule by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that would mandate automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems in all new U.S. passenger vehicles by 2029. This review, initiated by the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), could potentially delay or alter the regulation aimed at reducing traffic accidents. The rule, which was set to be finalized by August 2024, would require vehicles to have AEB systems capable of stopping to avoid a vehicle in front at speeds up to 62 mph and detecting pedestrians at speeds up to 40 mph. The review process has sparked concerns among safety advocates about potential delays in implementing life-saving technology, while industry groups have expressed worries about the costs and technical challenges of compliance.
