  • New U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy signed an order on Tuesday directing U.S. regulators to rescind landmark fuel economy standards issued under President Joe Biden that aim to drastically reduce fuel use for cars and trucks.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on January 29, 2025, to repeal the Biden administration's stringent vehicle fuel economy standards, known as the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. These standards, set to increase fuel efficiency to an average of 58 miles per gallon by 2032, were aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The repeal, supported by Republican lawmakers, argues that these regulations would increase vehicle costs, potentially harm the U.S. auto industry, and limit consumer choice. Critics of the repeal, including environmental groups and some Democrats, contend that it would hinder efforts to combat climate change and could lead to higher fuel costs for consumers in the long run. The bill now moves to the Senate, where its future is uncertain given the Democratic majority.
