Ford Motor on Wednesday projected up to $5.5 billion in losses on its electric vehicle and software operations this year, a loss similar to last year and a sign of the severe difficulties in cutting costs on battery-powered models.

Ford Motor Co. has forecasted that its electric vehicle (EV) division, Model e, will see its losses increase to $5 billion to $5.5 billion in 2025, up from a projected $4.5 billion loss in 2023. This projection comes as Ford reported a 10% rise in fourth-quarter adjusted earnings to 29 cents per share, surpassing Wall Street expectations. Despite the EV segment's struggles, Ford's overall financial health showed resilience with a 11.9% increase in revenue to $46 billion, driven by strong performances in its traditional combustion engine vehicles and commercial vehicle segments. Ford's CEO, Jim Farley, emphasized the company's strategy to manage costs and pricing in the EV market, while also highlighting the growth in Ford Pro, its commercial division, which saw a 19% revenue increase. The company also announced plans to scale back investments in new EV capacity to focus on profitability and adapt to market demands.
