Musk politics? Tesla sales slump in UK, European markets

  • Tesla posted lower sales across five European countries in January, including the United Kingdom and France, as competitors with newer models gained on the electric vehicle maker and polls show public opinion souring on CEO Elon Musk.

In January 2025, Tesla Inc. experienced a significant sales slump in five major European markets—Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Norway—due to what has been termed the "Musk effect." This downturn follows a series of controversial statements and actions by Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, which have reportedly tarnished the brand's image. Data from Dataforce and other sources indicate that Tesla's sales in these regions dropped by 20% to 40% compared to the previous year. The decline is attributed to Musk's polarizing public persona, which has led to a loss of consumer trust and a shift in buyer preference towards other electric vehicle manufacturers. Despite this, Tesla remains a leader in the EV market, but the sales figures suggest that the company's brand appeal is waning in Europe.
