  • As transportation evolves, job growth needs to focus on the full range of mobility employment, a new report from MichAuto says.

The article from Bridge Michigan discusses a report by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) which highlights the transformation in Michigan's automotive industry. It notes that while traditional auto manufacturing jobs are declining, employment in mobility-related sectors, such as electric vehicles (EVs), autonomous vehicles, and connected vehicle technologies, is on the rise. The report indicates that Michigan has seen a significant increase in mobility jobs, with over 130,000 people employed in these new sectors, surpassing the number of jobs lost in traditional auto manufacturing. This shift is attributed to the state's efforts to adapt to global trends towards electrification, automation, and connectivity in transportation. The growth in these areas is supported by investments from both established automotive companies and new tech firms, as well as government initiatives aimed at fostering innovation in mobility. However, the transition also poses challenges, including the need for workforce retraining and addressing the economic disparities between traditional and emerging sectors.
