A new highway experiment is now underway — the Department of Transportation just activated a speed camera on a stretch of I-5 in Skagit County and I-90 in Spokane.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has introduced five new speed cameras along a 25-mile stretch of Interstate 90 near Easton to enhance safety in a construction zone. These cameras, which began operating on August 1, are part of an effort to reduce speeding and protect workers, as the area has seen 44 crashes since 2019, resulting in 14 injuries. The cameras will issue tickets for speeds exceeding the limit by 11 mph or more, with fines starting at $136 and increasing with higher speeds. WSDOT has placed clear signage to alert drivers of the cameras and the speed limits, and the cameras will operate 24/7 until the construction project concludes in fall 2023.
