U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on Wednesday he supports an independent audit into airspace operations and safety oversight in the Washington, D.C., region after a January 29 fatal collision between an American Airlines regional passenger jet and an Army helicopter killed 67 people. On Monday, two dozen U.S. senators asked the inspector generals for the Pentagon and the Department to open audits in response to the collision and ongoing coordination issues between the Army and air traffic control at Reagan Washington National Airport, following the collision and a serious close call on May 1.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressed support for an independent investigation into the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, during an interview on CBS's "Face the Nation" on February 19, 2023. He emphasized the importance of understanding the incident's causes and ensuring accountability, while also highlighting the need for improved rail safety regulations. Buttigieg mentioned that the Department of Transportation has been pushing for higher fines for safety violations and better braking systems, but noted that some of these efforts have been stalled in Congress. He also addressed concerns about the safety of the nation's rail system, stating that while the U.S. has a strong safety record, there is always room for improvement.
