SPOKANE, Wash. - Mayor Lisa Brown is pushing back against plans to send untreated liquid waste from the Hanford Nuclear Site through Spokane, citing risks to residents and the environment.

Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward has expressed opposition to the transportation of radioactive waste from the Hanford nuclear site through Spokane, citing significant safety concerns for residents. The waste, which is being moved to a storage facility in Texas and another in New Mexico, is part of a cleanup effort at Hanford, one of the most contaminated sites in the U.S. Mayor Woodward's stance is supported by local officials and community members who are worried about the potential risks associated with transporting such hazardous materials through populated areas. The mayor has called for alternative routes to be considered to mitigate these risks.
