  • City officials will now study the location and determine if changes have to be made for a new transport system to the beach.

On May 12, 2025, the Dana Point City Council unanimously approved a new cliffside transportation system at Strand Beach, aimed at improving access for residents and visitors. The system, which includes a funicular and an elevator, will replace the existing staircase that has become hazardous due to erosion. The project, costing approximately $15 million, is expected to be completed by the summer of 2027 and will be funded through a combination of city funds, state grants, and private donations. The new transportation system is designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall beach experience while preserving the natural beauty of the area.
