  • Both companies say they are operating with Level 4 automation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), that means the vehicles are responsible "for driving tasks within limited service areas while occupants act only as passengers and do not need to be engaged."

Two companies, Aurora Innovation and Kodiak Robotics, have started testing driverless commercial trucks in the Houston area, specifically along a 240-mile route between Houston and Dallas. These autonomous trucks, which operate without human drivers, are part of a pilot program aimed at demonstrating the safety and efficiency of self-driving technology in commercial freight transport. The tests are being conducted in collaboration with local authorities and aim to gather data that could lead to broader adoption of autonomous trucks in the logistics industry. The initiative is seen as a step towards reducing human error in trucking, potentially improving road safety and addressing the ongoing driver shortage in the sector.
