  • The European Commission aims to propose draft legislation this year that would allow insurers, leasing companies and repair shops fair access to valuable vehicle data, according to its auto industry action plan to be published on Wednesday.

The European Union is set to introduce legislation that will mandate car manufacturers to share vehicle-generated data with independent service providers starting in 2025. This move aims to level the playing field in the automotive aftermarket by ensuring that data from connected cars, which includes information on vehicle performance, location, and maintenance needs, is accessible to all market players, not just the manufacturers. The legislation seeks to prevent carmakers from monopolizing this data, thereby fostering competition, innovation, and consumer choice in services like repair, insurance, and fleet management. The proposal, which is part of a broader push towards digital sovereignty and open data policies in the EU, has stirred debate among stakeholders, with concerns about data privacy, security, and the potential impact on car manufacturers' business models.
