  • The United Auto Workers union said on Thursday it filed unfair labor practice charges against Volkswagen , as the automaker cut jobs at a factory in Tennessee where the union is negotiating its first contract after winning an election there last year.

Volkswagen has reduced production at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant due to a parts shortage, specifically affecting the assembly of the ID.4 electric vehicle. This reduction comes at a time when the United Auto Workers (UAW) union has filed unfair labor practice charges against Volkswagen, alleging that the company has engaged in activities to discourage unionization efforts. The UAW claims that Volkswagen has threatened workers with the loss of benefits and has conducted surveillance on employees involved in union activities. Meanwhile, Volkswagen has stated that the production cut is unrelated to union activities and is solely due to supply chain issues. The situation highlights ongoing tensions between labor unions and automotive manufacturers, particularly as the industry shifts towards electric vehicles.
