Hiroshima-based Fukuyama Transporting is training driver candidates in Vietnam and offering language courses and driving tests, planning to hire 15 long-haul drivers around summer 2026.
Japan is addressing its acute shortage of truck drivers by recruiting from Vietnam and Indonesia. The country faces a deficit of approximately 38,000 drivers, exacerbated by an aging workforce and strict overtime regulations. To mitigate this, Japan has relaxed visa requirements for foreign drivers, allowing them to work for up to three years. This initiative not only helps in filling the labor gap but also aims to improve the working conditions for drivers by potentially reducing the long hours currently necessitated by the shortage. The recruitment drive is part of a broader strategy to integrate foreign labor into various sectors facing similar shortages, reflecting Japan's evolving approach to immigration and labor policies.
