  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 pickup trucks in the United States over reports of an unexpected gear downshift accompanied by a temporary rear wheel lock-up.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into approximately 12.8 million Ford F-150 trucks from the model years 2014 to 2021 due to reports of unexpected downshifting into first gear, which can lead to sudden deceleration and potentially cause accidents. This issue, which has been linked to at least 392 complaints, might be caused by a failure in the transmission sensor or the powertrain control module. Ford has previously issued technical service bulletins and software updates to address similar problems, but the effectiveness of these solutions is now under scrutiny. The investigation aims to determine the scope and severity of the issue, assess the risk to vehicle occupants and other road users, and decide if a recall is necessary.
