EU to propose giving automakers three years to meet CO2 emission targets

The European Commission will propose revising planned fines for automakers whose car and vans fail to meet 2025 CO2 emission targets, by allowing them to hit the targets based on fleet emissions over three years.

The European Union is set to propose extending the deadline for automakers to meet their 2025 CO2 emission targets by an additional three years, according to a draft document seen by Reuters on March 3, 2025. This proposal aims to provide car manufacturers with more time to adapt to stringent emissions regulations amidst challenges like the global chip shortage and the economic impacts of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The extension would allow carmakers to pool their emissions with those of manufacturers of electric vans, potentially easing the transition to lower emission vehicles. This move comes as part of the EU's broader strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, balancing environmental goals with the practicalities of industry transition.
