Oregon among 20 states suing feds for tying transportation, disaster funding to immigration enforcement

Two federal lawsuits filed Tuesday aim to protect and preserve billions of federal dollars already awarded to states.

Oregon, along with 19 other states, has filed a lawsuit against the federal government, challenging a policy that ties transportation and disaster relief funding to immigration enforcement. The states argue that this policy, implemented by the Department of Homeland Security, unlawfully coerces them into participating in immigration enforcement activities, which they contend should be a federal responsibility. The lawsuit claims that the policy violates the 10th Amendment by infringing on states' rights and forcing them to choose between receiving crucial federal funds and adhering to their own immigration policies. Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum emphasized that the state should not be forced to act as an arm of federal immigration enforcement to secure necessary funding for transportation and disaster relief.
