Boston Public Schools students could lose bus transportation under new ridership policy

Starting in May, BPS said it will be "taking a step towards increasing the efficiency" of busing students to school.
The Boston Public Schools system is considering a significant change to its start times, proposing that high schools and middle schools begin at 8:30 a.m. or later, in line with recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics for better adolescent health and academic performance. This adjustment, which could be implemented as early as the 2024-2025 school year, aims to address the chronic issue of sleep deprivation among students, potentially improving their alertness, mood, and overall well-being. The change would require a reshuffling of bus schedules and might face logistical challenges, but Superintendent Mary Skipper emphasized the importance of prioritizing students' health and academic success.
