The helicopter crashed in 2023, while on a mission to rescue two trampers.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has determined that the 2023 Mount Pirongia rescue helicopter crash was caused by the pilot's loss of situational awareness due to poor visibility and a lack of visual references, leading to the helicopter colliding with terrain. The incident occurred during a nighttime rescue operation on February 11, 2023, when the helicopter, operated by GCH Aviation, was attempting to land near the summit of Mount Pirongia to rescue an injured tramper. The pilot, who sustained serious injuries, was the only person on board at the time of the crash. The TAIC's final report highlighted the challenges of conducting night operations in mountainous terrain and recommended improvements in training and equipment to enhance safety in similar future operations.
