Llanelli to Get GBP20m Multimodal Transport Hub, Set to Create 1,000 Jobs
Locale: UNITED KINGDOM

New Transport Hub in Llanelli Promises a Boost for Jobs, Connectivity and the Local Economy
Llanelli’s historic rail station is slated to be transformed into a brand‑new, multimodal transport hub that could create up to 1,000 jobs and dramatically improve access to the surrounding region. The ambitious redevelopment—backed by Transport for Wales (TfW) and the Welsh Government—will turn the town’s current, cramped rail terminus into a modern, integrated centre that links trains, buses, cycling routes and pedestrian pathways, while also providing a substantial park‑and‑ride capacity.
From a 1960s Terminus to a Modern Mobility Hub
The existing Llanelli railway station, which dates from the 1960s, has long been described by local transport officials as “out of date” and ill‑suited for the growing demand for public travel. The new hub will replace the current 400‑metre platform with a 1,200‑metre, fully accessible one that can accommodate longer trains and additional carriages. The design incorporates a glass‑roofed waiting area, real‑time digital passenger information, and a dedicated bike‑parking facility that can house more than 400 bicycles.
The new station will also feature a “street‑level” bus interchange, a series of covered bus bays, and a dedicated drop‑off lane for private vehicles. A key element of the design is a new footbridge that will connect the town centre with the station, providing pedestrians with a safe, direct route through the busy retail area that houses the town’s shopping parade and a recently refurbished community centre.
The transport hub will sit on the same footprint as the existing station, meaning the project will largely be an upgrade rather than a relocation. TfW confirmed that the old station building will be demolished, but the façade will be preserved as a heritage feature, with a small museum‑style exhibit that tells the story of Llanelli’s railway history.
Funding and Timeline
The project is being financed through a partnership between TfW, the Welsh Government and the local Carmarthenshire County Council. The Welsh Government’s Transport Fund has allocated £12 million, while TfW has pledged an additional £8 million. In total, the hub is expected to cost around £20 million.
Construction is slated to begin in early 2025, with a completion date of late 2028. The Welsh Government has expressed confidence that the hub will be fully operational by the time the new South Wales Metro timetable launches in 2029. The hub’s design team—led by a local architectural firm—has emphasised that the project will employ local contractors and aim to source 60 % of its construction materials from suppliers within Wales.
Economic Impact and Local Reaction
Transport for Wales has highlighted that the new hub will create an estimated 1,000 direct jobs, ranging from construction and engineering to operations, customer service and maintenance. There will also be a projected multiplier effect of 2.5, translating to 2,500 additional indirect jobs across sectors such as hospitality, retail and local services.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s economic development officer, Sarah Davies, said the hub “will be a catalyst for growth in Llanelli and beyond.” She noted that the improved connectivity will make Llanelli more attractive for businesses looking to tap into both the South West of Wales and the wider UK market. The council’s plans also include a new business incubator adjacent to the station, aimed at supporting tech start‑ups and green‑energy companies.
The local community has reacted positively to the announcement. A recent town‑hall meeting in March 2024 recorded more than 300 residents signing a petition in favour of the hub. The main points of concern were the preservation of the town’s historic character and the minimisation of traffic disruptions during construction. TfW has responded by committing to a phased construction approach that will keep the main road network open at all times, and by setting aside a heritage zone at the rear of the site to preserve the old platform area.
Integrated Transport Vision
The Llanelli transport hub is part of a broader strategic initiative by TfW to modernise rail infrastructure across South Wales. The hub will dovetail with the South Wales Metro plan, which seeks to create a seamless, high‑frequency public‑transport network linking major cities such as Swansea, Cardiff and Carmarthen.
In the words of TfW’s Director of Planning, Dr. Matthew Green, “Llanelli is a key node on the West Wales rail corridor, and its upgrade will help unlock the full potential of the South Wales Metro. By bringing trains, buses and cyclists together in one place, we’re providing a single destination for commuters, shoppers and tourists alike.”
The hub’s design also incorporates a “park‑and‑ride” facility capable of accommodating up to 1,200 cars. This feature will reduce congestion on the A40 corridor by encouraging commuters to switch to public transport for the final leg of their journey. A dedicated cycle‑way link will connect the hub to the National Cycle Network route 8, further promoting sustainable travel.
Looking Ahead
The Llanelli transport hub stands as a flagship example of Wales’ commitment to improving public transport and supporting local economies. By upgrading the town’s rail infrastructure, enhancing multimodal connections, and creating jobs, the project aims to make Llanelli a more vibrant, accessible and resilient community.
The project’s progress will be closely monitored by both TfW and the Welsh Government, with quarterly reports published on the official Transport for Wales website. Stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed via the Welsh Government’s “Transport Updates” portal, which provides detailed timelines, cost breakdowns and community engagement opportunities.
For those eager to see the transformation in action, the first site‑visit tour is scheduled for the weekend of 15 April 2025, with an official launch event planned for 1 September 2025—coinciding with the start of the new train timetable on the West Wales line.
