  • OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed a new bill allowing school districts to use state funding for alternative transportation options when school buses are not cost-effective.

The Washington State Senate has passed a bill, Senate Bill 5593, that allows school districts to use alternative vehicles like vans and SUVs for student transportation, aiming to address the shortage of bus drivers and improve efficiency. The bill, which passed with a 48-0 vote, enables smaller vehicles to transport students to and from school, as well as to extracurricular activities, without adhering to the same regulations as traditional school buses. This legislative change is expected to help districts manage transportation more flexibly and cost-effectively, particularly in rural areas where bus routes can be challenging. The bill now awaits the signature of Governor Jay Inslee to become law.
