  • Before planes, the 'Desert Pullman' buses ferried passengers in air-conditioned comfort across 885 miles of unforgiving Syrian desert.

The Nairn Transport Company, established by the Nairn brothers in the 1920s, operated a unique bus service known as the "Desert Pullman" that connected Beirut, Lebanon, to Baghdad, Iraq, via Damascus and Palmyra in Syria. This service, which began in 1923, was renowned for its luxury and comfort, offering passengers amenities like sleeping berths, dining facilities, and even a bar, making it a preferred mode of travel across the Syrian Desert. The service continued until 1956 when it was discontinued due to the increasing popularity of air travel and political instability in the region.
