How The AH-1 Cobra Attack Chopper Evolved From The UH-1 Huey Military Transport - SlashGear

The Army's AH-1 Cobra was America's first attack helicopter that Bell created off the back of the UH-1 Huey. It has undergone multiple upgrades.

The AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter evolved from the UH-1 Huey military transport through a series of modifications and innovations driven by the needs of the Vietnam War. Initially, the UH-1 Huey was adapted into a gunship by mounting weapons on its sides, but this configuration had limitations due to the Huey's design as a transport helicopter. To address these issues, Bell Helicopter's designer Bob Ferry and his team developed the AH-1 Cobra by retaining the Huey's dynamic components like the engine, transmission, and rotor system, but creating a new, sleeker fuselage optimized for attack missions. The Cobra featured a tandem seating arrangement for better visibility and control, and was equipped with a variety of weapons, including a chin-mounted turret with a minigun or grenade launcher. The first prototype flew in September 1965, and the AH-1 Cobra entered service in 1967, becoming a pivotal asset in the U.S. military's arsenal due to its agility, firepower, and adaptability.
