In a study published Wednesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), University of Oklahoma researchers detail their discoveries about why the brain tumor glioblastoma is...

Researchers at Osaka University have discovered that a zinc-transporting protein, ZIP4, plays a significant role in the aggressive growth of glioblastoma, a type of brain tumor. The study, published in the journal Oncogene, found that ZIP4 increases the uptake of zinc into glioblastoma cells, which in turn activates the mTOR signaling pathway, promoting rapid cell proliferation. The research also showed that higher levels of ZIP4 were associated with poorer prognosis in glioblastoma patients. By using siRNA to knock down ZIP4 expression, the researchers were able to inhibit tumor growth in experimental models, suggesting that targeting ZIP4 could be a potential therapeutic strategy for treating this aggressive cancer.
