President Joe Biden's outgoing administration is finalizing rules on Tuesday that will effectively bar nearly all Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market, as part of a crackdown on vehicle software and hardware from China.

The Biden administration has announced plans to impose new regulations on Chinese-made smart vehicles, citing national security concerns over the potential for these vehicles to collect sensitive data on U.S. citizens and infrastructure. The Commerce Department is set to issue a notice of proposed rulemaking in the coming weeks, aiming to implement these restrictions by late 2024. The move targets vehicles equipped with advanced technology like lidar, cameras, and internet connectivity, which could theoretically be exploited for espionage or sabotage. This crackdown reflects growing tensions between the U.S. and China, particularly in the realm of technology and data security, and could affect the import and operation of vehicles from China, including those from companies like BYD and Geely, as well as vehicles assembled in other countries using Chinese technology.
