  • The outgoing Biden administration plans to finalize rules next week cracking down on Chinese vehicle software and hardware, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told Reuters.

The U.S. is set to finalize rules next week aimed at addressing national security concerns related to Chinese-made vehicles, as announced by Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. These rules will focus on preventing the export of sensitive data from connected vehicles, which could potentially be used for espionage or sabotage by foreign adversaries. Raimondo emphasized the risks associated with vehicles that can be remotely accessed and controlled, highlighting the potential for these vehicles to be used maliciously. The initiative follows an inquiry launched in February 2024 to assess the implications of technology in connected vehicles from countries of concern, particularly China. The Commerce Department is expected to issue an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to gather public input on these regulations.
