  • A fast track consultation of the Zev Mandate, announced yesterday (26 November), could see the government row back on mandatory targets which currently require 70% of all new van sales and 80% of all new car sales to be electric by 2030.

The UK government has acknowledged that the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, which requires car manufacturers to ensure that a certain percentage of their sales are electric vehicles, is not working as intended. In response, the Department for Transport (DfT) has launched a fast-track consultation to gather feedback on potential adjustments to the mandate. This move comes amidst concerns from manufacturers about the feasibility of meeting the targets due to insufficient demand for electric vehicles and inadequate charging infrastructure. The consultation aims to refine the policy to better support the transition to electric vehicles while addressing the practical challenges faced by the automotive industry. The government is particularly focused on ensuring that the targets are realistic and that the necessary support systems are in place to facilitate the shift towards zero-emission transport.
