South Africa considering auto industry incentives as tariff buffer

South Africa is considering offering additional incentives to automakers to help cushion the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on cars, Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau said on Thursday.
South Africa is contemplating the introduction of new incentives and tariff protections for its automotive industry, as announced by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition on April 10, 2025. These measures aim to bolster the sector amidst global economic challenges and the shift towards electric vehicles. The government is engaging in consultations with industry stakeholders to finalize these policies, which are expected to support local manufacturers and enhance the competitiveness of South African automotive exports. The proposed incentives and tariffs are part of a broader strategy to ensure the sustainability and growth of the automotive industry in South Africa.
