Congestion from RiverLink project will push commuters to public transport, Metlink says

  • Wellington's public transport operator is preparing public transport in the Hutt Valley for changes ahead of September's RiverLink programme works.

The Riverlink project, a significant infrastructure development in the Hutt Valley, is expected to cause considerable traffic congestion, prompting Metlink to anticipate an increased reliance on public transport. Metlink's general manager, Scott Gallacher, stated that the project, which involves upgrading State Highway 2 and the Melling Interchange, will disrupt traffic for up to five years, leading commuters to seek alternatives. To accommodate this shift, Metlink plans to enhance bus and train services, including the introduction of a new bus route and timetable adjustments. Gallacher emphasized the importance of public transport improvements to manage the expected surge in demand and mitigate the impact of the construction on daily commutes.
